Four M.2 slots is the number that wins this board the top spot. Two of them run at PCIe 5.0, the graphics card slot is PCIe 5.0 too, and the remaining pair take Gen 4 drives — enough for a boot disk, a scratch drive for footage and a pair of project archives without a single SATA cable. We think that is the right thing to spend on. Slot count is what you still care about in three years, not the graphics on the heatsink.
The power delivery is more modest than the flagships here, and most people will not notice. Fourteen duet rails at 80A apiece is enough for the chips people actually pair with a B850 board, and the Frozr Guard cooling — 7W/mK pads under an extended block with extra choke pads — matters in a quiet case where the fans are barely turning. Sustained all-core overclocking on a 16-core chip is where the X870E-E's 18+2+2 design takes over.
Connectivity is where the money went. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 are built in, the 5 GbE port is the fastest single LAN connection here, and there is a 20Gbps USB-C on the rear panel. The board is honest about its ceiling: USB4 is not here, so anyone offloading footage through a USB4 card reader or an external RAID box should look at the ASUS X870E-E instead. For everyone else, paying for a port you never fill is the most common way to overspend on a motherboard.
One storage detail is worth knowing before you plan drives: the fourth M.2 slot runs at Gen 4 x2 rather than x4. Give that one the backup disk and keep the two Gen 5 slots for anything you are actively working from.
Pros
- Four M.2 slots, two at PCIe 5.0
- 5 GbE is the fastest single LAN port here
- Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 onboard
Cons
- No USB4; top port is 20Gbps USB-C
Our default AM5 board: four M.2 slots, PCIe 5.0 for the graphics card and two drives, Wi-Fi 7, and the fastest single Ethernet port in this group.
