Ten times zoom usually means a lens that is decent at everything and excellent at nothing. The Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm II makes that trade easier to accept: it covers 14-140mm, or 28-280mm in full-frame terms, so a street scene and a distant detail can be framed without a lens change. It earns the top spot here for travel and everyday use because it combines that range with splash and dust resistance and Power O.I.S., two features that matter more than a perfect test chart when you are moving.
The lens is compact enough to leave on a small Lumix body, and the metal mount gives it a more secure feel than the plastic-mount budget zooms here. Power O.I.S. does useful work at the long end, where handshake is most visible, and the sealed barrel means a passing shower is not an immediate panic. We did not treat it as a waterproof lens, but it is the one in this group we are least careful with on a damp walk.
The compromise is at 140mm, where fine detail loses some bite compared with the sharper telephotos here. That is the cost of a 10x zoom, and it is most visible in flat light or when you crop hard. We still reach for it when one lens has to cover a whole day; for a dedicated telephoto shoot, the OM System 40-150mm f/4 PRO is the better tool.
Pros
- 28-280mm equivalent in one lens
- Splash and dust resistant
- Power O.I.S. steadies handheld shots
- Compact, light build for small bodies
Cons
- Maximum aperture drops to f/5.6 at 140mm
We recommend the 14-140mm II as the best all-around zoom here: it covers 28-280mm equivalent, adds weather sealing and stabilization, and replaces two lenses on most trips.
