The astronaut's head is held on by a magnet, and that is the detail that makes this one pleasant to live with. The body stays put on a shelf while the projector tilts wherever you point it, so you can move the nebula from the headboard to the middle of the ceiling without unplugging anything. Most projectors here make you shuffle the whole unit around to aim it, which is a small annoyance until you are doing it in the dark.
Of everything we covered, this is the one we go back to when the point is atmosphere rather than features. It layers a slow, breathing field of green stars over eight nebula effects, with dimming and rotation speed on the remote so you can slow the drift until it stops pulling your eye. It is also the only pick here that looks good switched off, a small matte astronaut sitting on a shelf rather than a black box you hide behind a plant.
What you do not get is sound. There is no speaker, no white noise and no app, which keeps setup down to plugging in a USB cable and pointing the head, and it is exactly why the Rossetta dual lens below exists for anyone who wants the sleep machine built in. The five-watt output is enough for a bedroom and not much more; a big, brightly lit living room is not this one's job.
Placement does more for the picture than any setting. Sit it on a shelf roughly level with the wall you want to light, a few feet back, and the nebula has room to spread across the ceiling; from the floor you get one bright patch and a dark room. At just over 14 ounces it moves between rooms without a second trip, and the timer means you can fall asleep under it without leaving it running until morning.
Pros
- Eight nebula effects with a breathing star field
- Magnetic head aims anywhere on the ceiling
- Dimming, rotation speed and timer on the remote
- Looks like decor when switched off
Cons
- Remote needs a steady aim at the unit
- Stars stay green while the nebula changes color
We recommend it as the default galaxy projector: the effect is the most consistently beautiful here, the magnetic head aims anywhere, and it looks like decor rather than a gadget.
