Our default roll is Gaffer Power's 2-inch black cloth tape. It is the one we reach for when a cable has to cross a walking path, a backdrop seam has to vanish under a camera light, or a piece of gear needs a temporary fix that will not leave a mess. The 11-mil cloth has enough body to lie flat over a cable, and the matte finish stays matte instead of flashing back at the lens.
What separates it from a generic black tape is the balance. The rubber adhesive grips firmly, but the cloth backing tears cleanly by hand in both directions. We could pull a strip to length without scissors and press it down without the edges curling up around a corner. That matters on a set where you are moving fast and do not want to stop for a knife.
The residue-free story holds up for temporary work, which is what gaffer tape is for. We left strips on painted wood, cable jackets, and a black equipment case; they came up without a sticky film when we peeled slowly. Leave any gaffer tape down for weeks in sun or damp, and the result will depend more on the surface than the brand, so treat this as a temporary hold, not a permanent label.
The 2-inch width and 30-yard length are the unglamorous reason it travels well: the roll fits the width most cable work expects and still leaves room in a kit. For a first gaffer tape, a replacement roll, or the one you keep in the camera bag, this is the easy recommendation.
Pros
- Balanced hold and clean removal
- Tears straight by hand in both directions
- Matte black finish hides glare
- Standard 2-inch by 30-yard kit size
Cons
- Water-resistant rather than waterproof
We recommend Gaffer Power as the default 2-inch gaffer tape: it holds firmly, tears cleanly by hand, and comes up without a sticky film in temporary use.
