The measurement that catches people out is the mat. The openings are 3.5 x 5.5 inches rather than 4 x 6, which is how matting works: the mat overlaps a quarter inch of every edge to keep the print from falling through. On a group shot where someone stands near the frame line, that quarter inch is the difference between a photo and a cropped photo. Order the prints with a small border or crop them yourself before they go in.
That quibble aside, this is the frame we hand most people. Five 4x6s in a long, narrow 8 x 24 strip fit the walls nothing else fits, the gap between two windows, the space above a desk, the strip beside a doorway, and the plain black moulding does not argue with anything already in the room. Shatter-resistant glazing is the version we prefer to real glass in a hallway where kids and dogs pass at speed, and finding it at this price surprised us.
Hanging is a two-hand job because the frame is long, not because it is heavy; it weighs just over 11 ounces. Sawtooth hangers are attached for both orientations, so a landscape wall and a portrait wall both work. Run a strip of painter's tape at the height you want and rest the top edge against it, because levelling 24 inches of frame by eye goes wrong more often than not.
What it does not give you is flexibility: five openings is the layout, and there is no second mat in the box. If you want a bigger grid, the Golden State Art frame here is the step up. For a first collage frame, or five prints of a baby's first year across a nursery wall, this is the one we point to.
Pros
- Slim 8 x 24 footprint fits awkward walls
- Shatter-resistant glazing suits busy hallways
- Hangs vertically or horizontally, hardware included
- Budget price for five openings
Cons
- Engineered wood rather than solid wood
We recommend this one as the default: five 4x6 prints in a slim 8 x 24 frame, shatter-resistant glazing, and a price low enough that finishing a hallway stays cheap.
