A clamp, a dual ball head, a 1/4-inch screw, and an action-camera adapter in one small package: that completeness is why the SmallRig 1138 is our default. It covers the most common camera-clamp jobs without making you buy an arm separately. Clamp it to a desk edge, light stand, tripod leg, or gimbal rod, then angle a monitor, small camera, or microphone with the two ball joints. We like that the 1/4-inch screw and GoPro adapter are already there.
The metal body feels dense for its size, and the jaws close on round and flat surfaces without the flex we associate with plastic mounts. The 1.5 kg rating is enough for a compact camera, a monitor, or a small light, but not a full cinema rig. That is the line to watch: this is a clamp for the gear you can carry in one hand, not for a heavy lens and a cage.
The short arm is the point. It does not give much reach, but it keeps a monitor close to the clamp and out of the way, and the two joints let you flatten the whole thing for storage. We kept reaching for it when a second set of hands was more useful than a tripod.
If you need to hang a heavier camera or a big LED, step up to the 3755B or the UA017. For everything else, the 1138 disappears into a camera bag until you need a mount in a spot a tripod cannot go.
Pros
- Clamp, ball head, and 1/4-inch screw in one kit
- All-metal body with secure jaws
- 1.5 kg capacity for compact rigs
- Action-camera adapter included
Cons
- Small ball-head locking handle is fiddly
Buy the SmallRig 1138 if you want one compact clamp that can hold a monitor, small camera, or light at almost any angle without adding a separate arm.
