All 1,053 of the OM-1 Mark II's autofocus points are cross-type, which means each one reads horizontal and vertical detail rather than only one of the two — the difference between holding a bird against a bright sky and losing it the moment it banks. That single figure is why this body sits at the top of the guide. We spent our sessions with it on exactly that kind of unpredictable subject, and the keeper rate is what won us over: fewer frames checked on the back screen, more that were already sharp.
Everything around the autofocus is built to keep up. The 20.4MP stacked BSI sensor and TruePic X engine hold color and detail at the ISO settings a gray afternoon forces on you, and IP53 sealing with freeze-proofing to -10°C means rain, spray and cold aren't reasons to put the camera away. At 1.1 pounds it slips into a small shoulder bag beside a compact telephoto, which is the entire argument for Micro Four Thirds in one sentence.
The computational extras are more useful than the name suggests. Handheld high-res, Live ND, Live GND and focus stacking are the features we expect to ignore and then reach for constantly: focus stacking turns a macro session into something you can shoot without a tripod, and Live ND saves carrying filters to a waterfall.
Power is the one place it asks for planning. There's room for a single battery, and leaving the screens running drains it faster than you expect, so set a short sleep timeout and keep a spare in the bag. What we appreciated most, in the end, was the pair of card slots: leave a second card in permanently and a full or failed card never ends a shoot.
Pros
- 1,053 all-cross-type autofocus points
- IP53 sealing and freeze-proofing to -10°C
- 20.4MP stacked BSI sensor with TruePic X
- Two card slots and a 1.48x viewfinder

We recommend the OM-1 Mark II to anyone who shoots moving subjects outdoors and wants pro-level hit rates from a body that still fits a small bag.
